Often used as a pre-med,diazepam is a benzodiazepine, which helps to increase GABA levels in the brain, causing the patient to relax. This medicine is often indicated as a muscle relaxant and anti-anxiety medicine, but its primary use in the dental practice is helping anxious patients to get their stress under control before surgery, and feel more relaxed.
Any food or drink with Caffeine can increase anxiety, working against the diazepam. Grapefruit juice should also be avoided. This is not a complete list. Always refer to the product information leaflet for more details.
If the patient is made drowsy by the diazepam, they should not drive or ride a bike.
