How does the Piezotome Cube work?

The Piezotome Cube is an ultrasonic device, similar in concept to an ultrasonic scaler, but multitudes more powerful. Utilising incredibly rapid vibrations, its metal tip is capable of easily cutting through bone & other mineralised tissues while – notably – preventing damage to soft tissues. Utilising a process called piezoelectricity, which converts electrical current into the physical oscillation of its cutting tip. Correct use of the Piezotome Cube reduces the chance for user error and helps to preserve blood vessels, nerves, ligaments, and any other soft tissues which should be protected during surgery. This ultimately encourages safer procedures for patients, and enhanced recovery, which is especially helpful in procedures such as Apical surgery & other microsurgeries.

How The Piezotome Cube Enables the Bony Lid Technique
You may have heard about the Bony Lid Technique already. This technique is used in apicoectomies, and it works by creating a window in the bone & forming a removable lid. This window helps to provide better access to lesions, as well as visibility, and with the Piezotome Cube the window can be made and then resealed with the "lid". The lid is formed and then carefully extracted to be preserved in Hanks Solution (isotonic saline). This removal helps to facilitate the microsurgical procedure, and once that procedure is completed, the lid is repositioned and secured using platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) or a collagen membrane.
This procedure is preferred for several reasons, firstly it can be very useful in providing access and visibility which wouldn't otherwise be possible without bone removal. The use of the Piezotome Cube creates a precise, non-heated osteotomy cut which decreases trauma and simplifies the repositioning and stabilization of the lid. Secondly, it limits the intrusion of periodontal cells, encouraging bone healing.
