Dürr X-Ray - The 60-year story
If you were to survey Dürr’s impressive 80 years of service, their impact in the field of dental x-rays would stand out in particular. While Dürr has only been involved in X-Rays since 1966, those six decades of service have had a notable impact in how practices have approached X-Ray technology, from developing Procomat, the world’s first fully automated X-ray film development machine, to its more modern inventions. Today, we’ll be going over Dürr’s Role in shaping modern Dental X-Ray technology. Their innovations, and their current offering when it comes to X-ray machinery.
If you don’t know about us, we’re Dental Directory. We’re a dental service provider and supplier who’ve been happily supporting practices for the last fifty years. We do training, equipment, products, and even full surgery kit fit outs. Once you’re done with this blog, why not see what we can do for you?
1968 - The Procomat
Dürr’s first contribution to the field of Dental X-Rays was the Procomat, a fully automated X-ray film development device. Prior to the use of the Procomat, developing film for dental x-rays was a process which required manual input and attention. Additionally, film processing required its own dedicated space and equipment. The Procomat was interesting because it reduced the infrastructure burden required to process dental X-ray film, meaning more cases could be processed and more efficiently.
The Procomat was swiftly followed by a device called the 1330, which also allowed for fully automated x-ray film processing. Then came the XR 24 in 1989, which set a new standard for X-Ray Film development. The XR 24 was so impactful, its design is being iterated on to this day, and can still be found in practices across the globe.
The need for NDT - DR 7 NDT and Dürr NDT.
While X-ray imaging was advancing at an impressive rate, a new need arose in 1997, the need for Non-Destructive Testing, or NDT. NDT is a type of x-ray imaging which seeks to provide accurate images for scanning without damaging the subject. In response to this, in 2008 Dürr released their first NDT model, which was supplemented by Dürr’s own “green” NDT X-ray chemicals. These chemicals complied with the high requirements of the European chemicals directive, REACH.
One of the most recent pieces of equipment from Dürr’s NDT Range is the DR 7 NDT, a CMOS detector which is largely used in the aerospace industry, as well as oil and gas industries.
The move into NDT is reflected in Dürr’s Dental subdivision, as introducing the VistaScan range in 2002 helped Dürr Dental to quickly shore up their reputation as a leading image plate scanner manufacturer. Being reusable, these plates were a digital and economical alternative to film.
Dürr Dental X-Ray Imaging – The Current Vista Range
Vista is the title given to Dürr’s X-ray equipment range, from plate scanners to CBCT Machines.
Currently, the Vista Range includes the following:

A CBCT machine with a difference, this machine boasts ideal imaging volume, higher quality of images (pixel size of 49.5 μm) , and easier positioning. Regarding image volume, VistaVox S offers an ideal 3D volume which is adapted to the jaw archiving you an imaging volume which has been based on the human anatomy, representing precisely the area you need for diagnostics in the dental region.
When it comes to OPG scans, this CBCT Machine’s integrated S-Pan technology helps to ensure higher quality 2d imaging.

A 2D intraoral imaging unit with a small footprint and unique workflow. This device is very easy to use, with an 8” glass touchscreen, and simple operating software. This unit boasts a state-of-the-art Csl sensor, which improves image quality and encourages better diagnostics. Additionally, the VistaPano S 2.0 also utilises S-Pan technology, which uses the image information from the individual patient image to automatically create a pinpoint-sharp panoramic image of every tooth and jaw position.

This is an image plate scanner which uses artificial intelligence to build better workflows. Including PCS-technology and an integrated erasing function for all intraoral formats (including occlusal/Size 4). If it’s different working options you need, this scanner boasts mobile working options, wireless LAN and net connection with high-res touch display for ScanManager and patient information.

With PCS-technology and integrated erasing function for all intraoral formats including occlusal (Size 4), net connection with integrated glass display for patient information. When you match this with its superior image quality, coming from its tried-and-tested PCS technology, it makes your dental practice sustainably ready for the future.

This is a highly effective device, marrying the improved image quality of PCS technology with an excellent performance and new, innovative features. This plate scanner has been created to suit the high demands of larger dental surgeries/clinics.

VistaScan Combi View

This is a plate scanner that looks to save you time and effort. With the digitalisation of image plates for both intraoral and extraoral formats being simplified in a quick, and easy workflow. This is thanks to features including its large touchscreen plus intuitive user interface. The integrated WLAN capability makes the VistaScan Combi View uniquely flexible.

An intraoral camera with an interchangeable head mechanism, allowing for different heads to support your diagnosis. This system has heads which lend themselves particularly well to plaque visualisation, and for the early detection of caries. Both of which can help to enhance patient understanding of their case.
-
VistaRay

Maintaining a high level of detail despite the low radiation doses, this sensor offers an impressive resolution of 20 LP/mm with particularly fast image availability. The sensor can be connected directly via USB („Plug & Ray“) and is available in two sizes: Universal and Bitewing.

The modern DC technology of the VistaIntra X-ray machine ensures reliably high image quality and reduces patient dose by >25 % when compared to conventional AC generators. Keeping your patients and practitioners safe.
-
VistaSoft

Dürr’s proprietary software for sharing and managing images via the cloud, planning implants and drilling techniques. Vistasoft operates on a one-click principle, a belief in ease-of use and intuitive design.
-
VistaPosition PSP Holder system

A holder system which has been bespoke-made to be used to hold image plates, and combine a number of practical solutions in just one product. With perfect-fit bite blocks to secure image plates in place, while improving the plate’s durability, and colour-coded construction guides, this holder system is practical, convenient, and optimised.

These image plates have been designed to create outstandingly high quality-images, and facilitate accurate diagnosis. The size portfolio of these plates are extensive, meaning you’ll always be able to access the correct plate size.

A light protection cover which helps to extend the usable life of image plates, and maintain high image quality.
Dürr Activities
If you’re persuaded by Dürr’s pedigree in dental X-ray Diagnostics, their website is (at time of writing) filled with discounts on selected diagnostic systems. Additionally, Dürr are offering free consultations, with promotional benefits, and free 60th anniversary-themed mugs for your practice. Terms and conditions apply, of course, and they can be found in full on the Dürr Website.
Conclusion
Dürr has an extensive history with x-ray technology, and are responsible for some of the more impressive optimisations of the last few decades. Their expertise in the field of x-rays helps to give them a keen insight into the needs of dentists, and the practical aspects of the x-ray process. Dürr uses this insight to effectively make excellent x-ray equipment and accessories.Find out more about the Melag Vacuclave 305 with Dental Directory
